Here are the TOP 10 things that people like about caches.

  1. They go to places that they would not have otherwise;
  2. Scenic locations;
  3. Historical/educational/interesting caches;
  4. Well maintained caches;
  5. Large containers;
  6. Clever/Creative containers or hides;
  7. Good contents;
  8. Caches with some challenge (intellectual or physical) - but not too much;
  9. Accurate co-ordinates;
  10. Puzzle caches.

Have a skim through these responses and you'll see that there are recurring themes of what people enjoy about caches.  Keep these in mind when you are planning and placing your caches.

  • The cache conducts you through nature.
  • The cache is produced carefully.
  • The cache is cared for at regular intervals.
  • You hike and look for the cache.
  • There are no muggles.
  • Interesting hiding places
  • Clever camouflage
  • Travel bugs
  • Sophisticated placements in very interesting places
  • Very interesting TBs and geocoins
  • Waterproof containers or paper
  • Cool location, nice walk, a reason to show someone this spot
  • Some thought and time put into the cache
  • Upkeep or response on cache page if problems arise
  • Off the beaten path places
  • Some are quite creative,
  • New ways to hide caches
  • I like those with themes
  • Creative placement
  • Good hiding (not too easy)
  • I enjoy the ones that are in wooded or less developed areas, since they often bring me to places I otherwise wouldn't have visited.
  • A walk of any length being involved
  • Creative containers
  • Imaginative themes

  • I like the adventure of exploring the woods and finding a decent sized cache.
  • I like the easy ones that I can pick up while on vacation and driving from point A to point B
  • Something out of the ordinary....like a cache hanging high in a tree while everyone is looking for something on the ground
  • Family friendly caches with lots of goodies for the kids!
  • Well hidden
  • Cool swag
  • Fun or interesting places
  • Nice clean contents
  • Well thought out puzzles or hiding spots
  • Hiking long distances to see great views
  • Coins or trackables in the cache
  • Excellent coordinates, taken by caring cachers under controlled conditions.
  • Caches that are maintained including replies from curious cachers who take the time to e-mail and ask about your cache. These cachers have the time to reply, so obviously have a manageable number of caches.
  • Caches placed in public places with permission and supported by the land/business owner.
  • Caches with appropriate cache attributes in their description. Attributes like "Available in Winter" for caches in Florida & "Takes less than an hour" for lamp post caches are "inappropriate" and a waste of resources. Cachers who use the attributes well make for happy caches/cachers.
  • I would rather see more caches placed in parks and fewer caches placed in areas that cause law enforcement to question "What are you doing here poking around after business hours?" Sure, some caches may be placed in public areas, but not all areas are appropriate for caches.

  1. Wow. There’s so much to like about geocaches. :) Thanks for outting this together. It’s a shame when some caches don’t meet any of the criteria on that long list.

    • Lone R, I agree. However the feedback that I am getting is that poor quality caches and the people who hide them don’t tend to last long. The more experienced that people become, the better their caches become – in general.
