I hate bad geocaches

There was a 42% response to this question. People were sometimes quite vehement in their answers.

Read through all of the responses and you'll get a good idea of how NOT to place a cache.

Here are the Top 10 things that people DON'T like:

  1. UNINTERESTING LOCATIONS
  2. MICROS AND NANOS
  3. CACHES THAT TOO EASY
  4. CACHES THAT ARE POINTLESS
  5. JUNK CONTENTS
  6. POORLY MAINTAINED (e.g. soggy logbooks)
  7. POOR CONTAINERS
  8. INACCURATE CO-ORDS
  9. TOO PUBLIC (too many muggles)
  10. PLACED IN INACCESSIBLE PLACES
  • Too obvious
  • Uninteresting locations
  • Placed often near places where homeless people sleep (in cities)
  • Non waterproof containers
  • Wrong or bogus information or hints
  • Drive-in caches, in places where's nothing to be seen
  • Rubbish tatty swag
  • Swearing on an earthcache page
  • Too hard to find
  • I hate it when: boxes are just hidden in any woods without any history etc. randomly placed with no purpose no problems placed in private property locations being muggled ugly areas
  • Logbooks not replaced when full
  • No point -- why is this even here?
  • Poor containers that break down quickly
  • Lamp post hides
  • Flimsy containers
  • Too much location info
  • Bad hints
  • Front yard caches

  • Poor containers above ground, bury some of them and say that you'll need a metal detector

  • Micros in a forest where a large cache could easily be placed
  • Micro caches in uninteresting places seem to be there just so someone can place a cache.
  • Owners who don't want you to find their caches and they make them too hard, put the coordinates off on purpose, move their caches so if you PAF they are not in the same spot as they were preiously.

  • Placed in areas only mothers and children are expected
  • Hard to open rusty metal containers - altoids, etc.

  • Location without permission or where they can cause trouble to people looking

  • Cache was a film can tossed in the weeds along side the road
  • When they do not stick to the theme (when there is one)
  • Too many that are too small for swaps

  • Kids do not like micros.

  • Poorly maintained
  • Log books full or soggy
  • To many micros,  not waterproof (contents soggy)
  • Some Items for trade are basically someone's trash caches placed on private property
  • Wet, soggy, moldy Micros in spruce trees
  • Absolutely hate nanos!
  • Micros are barely tolerable!
  • Hidden too far from coordinates
  • Uninteresting places too many micros/nanos in the woods
  • Caches place in sketchy locations with ANY permission or even notification to nearby businesses, etc. Why would people will be poking around the lightpost, payphone, bush outside their place of business.

  • Micros rated incorrectly...1 & 1 Some are too difficult. if I don't like it I don't look for it a lot tend to be micros in the immediate area

  • Pointless caches

  • Kids disappointed in trade opportunities
  • Light skirt caches in a large parking lot..done one you've done them all
  • Wet logs
  • Some people hide a lot of caches, but do not perform work when it is needed
  • Lack of fantasy when trading things in the cache (resulting in flooding them with plastic trash).
  • I prefer No Trade then take something (mostly attractive) and place anything priceless caches that are placed JUST because the area didn't have one- it usually ends up being a pointless, not thought out micro.
  • Small urban micros in locations that arouse suspicion
  • Micros hidden in the woods at ground level
  • Some are in very public spots and are asking to be muggled
  • Don't really care for micro's
  • Microcaches in the walls
  • I don't like seeing places strewn with garbage.
  • No containers, (just a logbook jammed in a tree)
  • Stupid micro-caches
  • Random spot in the woods covered with bark, nothing interesting around.
  • No redeeming features
  • Caches that are laying on the ground - no creativity
  • Too public
  • Poor locations lamp skirt hides LPCs=boring and predictable trash swap items
  • Mosquitos, spiders, bees
  • Banal places for placing the caches places that are not worth a visit
  • Too many nanos not well maintained not finding them
  • I don't like looking for caches in a public area where you go looking under bushes or spots where it looks like you are snooping or  the like.
  • Micro's are often hidden at the base of a street lamp in the metal housing at the bottom. We've found them in malls near stores and similar places.  I always feel awkward looking for caches in these places.

  • Lamppost caches micro in a tree Some cachers use too much space in small logs - they fill the log unnecessarily months will go by without a successful find and the cache owners still wont go check on their cache

  • Miss the themes reg & lg caches containing only plastic trash
  • Lack of maintenence
  • Co-ords are off so far you can't find it and the person won't give you a hint when you ask them
  • Not maintained, wet, coords not accurate
  • Throw  Down Caches Drive Up crappy micro caches

  • Caches placed for statistical purposes i.e.   powertrails
  • Some series are too close together and should be called multi
  • Just another cache under a bush to mark nothing more than a road sign

  • Nothing interesting about location (suburban street, supermarket car park, etc.) ones just thrown somewhere if the cache container is not going to be good, put it in a nice location
  • Too many microcaches
  • Placed in areas where I think "this needs a CITO!"
  • All placed under a stone Nano's Cache could have been considered trash by a cleaning crew
  • In very popular public places loction is so busy its next to impossible to not to be seen.
  • Micros in woods where there is possiblility for larger damages caused by searchers
  • People picking up my travel bugs & keeping them!
  • Contain little more than disappointing, cheap, plastic toys from crackers.
  • Don't like the soggy ones,
  • No baggie/protection for log
  • When coordinates are way off.
  • Too exposed to muggles too many micros in a row
  • I hate caches that are hidden in homless trash midens.
  • Nothing like worrying about getting a needle stick while geocaching. I have found crack pipes, pot stashes, used needles etc.

  • Sometimes the placement is kinda weird they don't take me any place worth seeing

  • I much prefer those that take me to new places - either in town or out in the mountains or desert.

  • Publicly hidden caches - stealth to find and then high risk for muggling when I'm done with it

  • Some cache locations that don't allow for even a small amount of privacy put the cache at risk of being muggled, not to mention uncomfortable for some to find.
  • Coordinates for Puzzles that are in the middle of streets
  • Coordinates not of the actual cache location, but rather" nearby"
  • Caches deep in the woods
  • Inaccurate coordinates
  • No worthwhile reason for the placement to be there.
  • Puzzle caches - I can't usuually be bothered
  • The litter in the cache boxes
  • Some very bad places
  • Hints that are misleading
  • When containers aren't weather-proof, and get mouldy inside
  • The generic caches on electric boxes.
  • Junk containers
  • 35mm film canisters in a layby
  • Series of caches along a pathway without of point of interest
  • Rocky terrain
  • Some are far too easy
  • Badly presented caches with nothing in them
  • Same hides again and again
  • When they are full of uninteresting crap
  • Bushwhacking
  • Some of the swag is pure trash
  • Trivial hiding place
  • Wet, boggy areas that get you dirty finding
  • One that is full of McDonald's toys

  • Finding real junk, like used balloons or hairbands
  • Placed elsewhere instead of special places with nice surrounding, building, view, something  to learn about etc.

  • Some are really impossible to get for grown ups.

  • The amount of cheap tat in some caches
  • Caches placed in messy places or bushes
  • Difficult GPS reception at cache site
  • You just know the cache will soon be muggled.
  • Hidden too close to busy places
  • False terrain and difficulty ratings
  • Disappeared of incomplete waypoints
  • It takes ages to choose a cache that's worthwhile (i.e. they are in parking lots in dense bushes)
  • Super simple, thrown by the side of the road,
  • Caches under heavy tree cover
  • Caches put in because there isn't one there.
  • No history, nothing specific to take you there,
  • Just a cache for the sake of a cache!
  • Don't like graveyard caches
  • Caches located near playgrounds...No!
  • No swag
  • LPC's are a waste of time
  • Wet logs
  • Some locations are too easy
  • Too simple and obvious
  • Aat times when someone removes a trackable and DOES NOT log it
  • Wrong coordinates
  • Some creator-curators do not tend their caches; nor do they respond to emails to do something
  • Lack of cache maintenance
  • Caches are full of water (wrong type of containers).
  • Many too easy
  • Cheap tat left
  • Location is uninteresting
  • Too easy to find
  • Too close to persons residents
  • Placed in highly visible sites
  • At busy intersections
  • Can't find many easy enough without GPS

  • Caches in front of a store that no way stealth can be done
  • Too many micro and nanos
  • There are too many Micro Caches out there

  • Damage to property done by other cachers
  • Items added without much thought, or just because they were handy (pine cones, 2p pieces, that kind of thing)
  • Not enough variety-sometimes the only caches are difficult micros,

  • Placing a cache in a spot that has no reason for a cache

  • People who find caches but don't log on the website
  • Caches that are too easy to find
  • Micros in the woods are rarely "challenging"; they're just hard for no reason.
  • A vast majority of travel bugs listed in caches are not actually present

  • Poor containers that allow cache contents to get wet
  • Micros in woods when there is no need
  • Questionable location (private property)

  1. Worthless crap left like pen lids, even mcdonalds toys, ect. Spend $2 and then at least the stuff makes a nice trophy for the next person.
